The Federico family can trace its noble origins to the Italian region of Tuscany. Although people were originally known only by a single name, it became necessary for people to adapt a second name to identify themselves as populations grew and travel became more frequent. The process of adopting fixed hereditary surnames was not complete until the modern era, but the use of hereditary family names in Italy began in the 10th and 11th centuries.
There was a major Spanish family of Federico's that ruled Sicily in the 12th and 13th century, from Valencia Spain.
Italian hereditary
surnames were developed according to fairly general principles and
they are characterized by a profusion of derivatives coined from given
names. Although the most traditional type of family name found in the
region of Tuscany is the patronymic surname, which is derived from the
father's given name, local surnames are also found. Local names, which
are the least frequent of the major types of surnames found in Italy,
are derived from a place-name where the original
bearer once resided or held land.
Often Italian local surnames bore the prefix "di," which signifies emigration from one place to another, but does not necessarily denote nobility. The Federico family lived in the city of Florence, with Federigo Federighi during the early 14th century. Also, the further north you live with the name of Ferderici, that is more popular. The further south you live, Federico is much more popular.
The Federico name is also popular in Spain. About 50 names. There are over 800 names from Italy. One of the reasons for the Federico name being from Italy(no confirmation), is that it appears that the Federico's that were in Rayon, Sonora, were probably miners, and the best miners in the world at that time came from Southern Italy, and there was a great mining boom in Rayon and the surrounding areas at the time.

Dear Freinds, my maternal grandfathers name was Luis Vazquez Federico. His maternal grandfathers name was Refugio Federico. The Federico name in Mexico is rare. What I want to know is it possible that my ancestors came from Italia or Sicily. The most notable family member in my family was Maria del Carmen de Federico who married the Marquis de Urquijo sometime in the early 19th century,in Madrid,Spain. Other than that,I do not know what the origin of the Federicos in my family is.The Federicos in my family were ranchers and still are. They had reddish hair,a typical Roman nose. And settled in the northern state of Sonora,Mexico,in an area called El Distrito de Altar.Anyone that knows or has information on this name please email me at DiscosElGato@webtv.net or you can also visite my site at www.AnaGabrielaGuevara.com Ciao, Alvaro Guevara V.
My grandfather, Luis Federico II (1927- ) was born in AZ. His father, Luis Federico II ( - 1935) was born in Mexico, and married Anita Salcedo (1094 - ) . My ggg was Joaquin Federico who married Francisca. I would appreciate any information regarding the Federico's from Mexico.
I am also interested in the FEDERICO name. I am searching on behalf of my daughter for my ex's family. I have found his gggrandmother, Conception FEDERICO from Yuma, AZ with a mother's name of possibly Lions FEDERICO; father's name not known. Conception married a Michael Naveres and came to San Bernardino, CA in 1896 in a covered wagon and was a pioneer there. Conception was born in 1854. If you can provide any links, it would be tremendous. Thank you.
My great-grandmother's maiden name was Adela Federico. Her family was from Magdalena, Sonora, and there is a rich history that my grandmother an I have recently started documenting. Federico is not a common name, and we have had trouble finding records, as there was a fire in Magdalena in which many records were burned. My grammy had several sisters which eventually came to Tucson,Az. Please respond if you would like to trade notes..
Hi Leslie, To tell you the truth, I didnt think anybody would reply. But it is great! My dad was born in Oquitoa and I understand half of the town is a federico. His parents were Jose (married)Rita Murrieta Diaz. I understand the name Jose Francisca Mendivil play a part in this somehow. My family was from Tucson AZ. Until we moved to Calif. in the 60s. On the 20th of April we go to Tucson for a family reunion of the Corral family which is my moms side and there I will see alot of relatives and hope to get as much info as I can. Hope to hear from you again, Virgina...by the way, I am an artist of Latin American artwork (Virginia Olivares).

Greetings, I
The Federico clan in my family are from the Region of Rayon,Sonora,Mexico and have lived in Sonora since the time of Imperial Spains conquest of Mexico near Hermosillo. The family as I understand it was in the Cattle business. With regards to features, the Federicos in my family were white/red or blond hair with blue or green eyes, possibly of Visigoth/Italo extraction with regards to the Spanish origin. The surname Federico or Federici pronounced,"Federichi" is of Italo/Roman origin. Since Imperial Rome once occupied Iberia, which they named "Hispania" or in todays version España almost 2000 years ago,it is possible that the Federicos were Romans, living in occupied Spain. I know for a fact according to family records, the my great great aunt,Maria Del Carmen de Federico, married the Marquis de Urquijo, possibly "Mariano Luis"who was secretary of state to King,Charles IV of Spain and a member of the Knights of Santiago. Well most of the family info is in Mexico in the hands of my uncles who I rarely see.But this is general information regarding the Federicos. Are you related by any chance to Henry Federico of Tucson,or a teacher by the name of Leo Federico who taught in Nogales High School? Well I have to run,but stay in touch,we might be from the same clan. Best Regards, Alvaro Guevarap.s. Did you see our humble webpage?(www.AnaGabrielaGuevara.com)
Greetings Alfred,I think in a historical sense the Federicos of Sonora and the southwest U.S. could be related. With regards to racial origins,I have a photograph of my great grand mother Rosa Federico Ruiz taken circa 1899 and she was a true Aryan! in
every sense of the word. So maybe the origins of the Federicos is in the Visigoths, and its original version was "Frederich" as you mentioned and which has a Nordic feel to it,rather than Germanic.Although I would rather want it to be Roman, instead of the "northern barbarians".hahaha... With regards to Maria del Carmen deFederico and her marriage to Marques de Urquijo and his Spanish banking family of Urquijo, thats a documented fact, not theory. In fact if I ever make any real money maybe I could claim my title of Baron!hahahaha or Count? or Viceroy!hahaha.. The only thing I can say is that the Vazquez Federicos, which includes my Grand Father, were ultra intellectuals and men of honor, in a Nietszchen point of view true "ubermensch" If I have a taste for the good things in life such as art, superior music, gourmet cuisine, philosophy, the sciences, business, philanthropy etc I own it to them. They made their mark in Sonoran history, not to mention they were pioneers of Nogales,Sonora,Mex. I have many fond memories of my Grand Father and great uncles, especial my aunt Maria Vazquez Federico de Cervantes Ochoa.Who aside from being a true humanitarian, was an ultra!!!!!!!!!! intellectual and educator.I have many drawings in chalk she did in her school years circa 1912. Unfortunately they all passed away and the wealth of knowledge with them. If you ever investigate the Federico heritage in detail and you go to Rayon,Sonora where to this day we have family that I have never met,let me know I might go with you. Well thank you for respondong to my email. Best Regards,Alvaro Guevara y Vazquez.p.s. My great great grand fathers name was Refugio Federico who married Josefa Ruiz De La Peña,parents of Rosa Federico Ruiz de Vazquez Galindo. I also know they were related to the Suarez and Robles clans of Sonora. They originated mainy in the Rayon,Sonora area and in the family there was even a Wunderkind "child seer" who according to my grand father people from other towns would come to speak to the young boy for advise etc.His name was Jesus Vazquez Federico and he died at the age of 12 or 15 years old.In your investigation if these names come up,we would be related. I might take a trip to Rayon this year its roughly 8 hours by car from here and look up the Federicos. You see you got me started!!!!hahaha... Best Regards,Alvaro Guevara y Vazquez
p.s. I geneally don't use the website email for topics outside Anas tribute etc.thats why I sending you a respond from here. Let me know if you come up with more info.and if your ever in the Phoenix,Ariz. call me at (602) 268-1819 maybe we could plan a trip to Rayon,Caborca,Altar, the towns where the Federicos originated, and still live.
Submitter: Virginia F Olivares Subject: mendivil Message: hello, I noticed the surname Mendivil. We don't know too much about my Gr-Gr-Grandmother.
